D-Day 80th anniversary
Many burgesses have served with the Armed Forces over the years and the Corporation was pleased to fly a special commemorative flag on the anniversary of D-Day as a mark of respect and gratitude not just to the burgesses but to all involved in the fight to maintain freedom.
New Portreeve
At the end of the Corporation year on the first Monday following the Feast of St Michael (September 29th) Big Court is held when the new Portreeve is appointed. On the next Sunday the Portreeve hosts a celebratory breakfast followed by Divine Service in St Martin's Church where he reaffirms his oath of office in a service conducted by the Portreeve's Chaplain. The final act is to return to the door of the Town Hall before celebrating in the local hostelries.
